Highlights
Our latest iteration of our Calculate software has included updates specified by ASME PCC-1 2022 as well as other general updates.
- Updates to pipe schedule data as per ASME B36.10, specifically some metric equivalent values have been updated to represent a better approximation of the imperial value. Minor changes also implemented as specified by ASME B16.5.
- Torque Tightening patterns have been updated and aligned with ASME PCC-1 2022.
- Tension Tightening patterns have been updated and aligned with ASME PCC-1 2022.
- An alternate Tension Tightening procedure has been implemented as specified by ASME PCC-1 2022 and is detailed below.
Changes implemented as part of the previous ASME PCC-1 2019 release are still valid and can be referenced here: ASME PCC-1 2019 Calculation Engine
ASME PCC-1 2022 Update
PCC-1 2022 Appendix Q Tightening Procedure
In ASME PCC-1 Appendix Q, section Q-4.5, details are provided with regards to tightening procedures for 100% and 50% tension cover and introduces two additional steps:
- Pass 1a, a first pass at 70% of assembly bolt load
- Pass 2, a final pass at the assembly load.
Thus, when selecting a tension coverage as per ‘PCC-1 2022 App Q’ option from the dropdown selection, these additional pass pressures will be generated as as shown in Figure 1:
Figure 1
Legacy Tightening Procedure
Traditionally, tensioning procedures give passes labelled A to D based on the selected coverage. 100% and 50% tensioning cover are most commonly used and when selected, pass pressures for the passes will be calculated and labelled accordingly, as shown in Figure 2:
Figure 2
ASME PCC-1 2022 Appendix Q Applied Load Multipliers
When a PCC-1 2022 App Q tightening procedure is selected, the additional steps Pass 1a and Pass 2 are available in the Calculate user interface as shown in Figure 1 and as part of the tightening procedure report.
ASME PCC-1 Appendix Q, section Q-4.4, makes reference to PVP Paper PVP2014-28685 for load loss factors. This paper presents Pass A and Pass B pressure multipliers to be used for calculating applied bolt loads which
have been renamed as ‘Pass 1b’ and ‘Pass 1c’ as stipulated in ASME PCC-1 Appendix Q.
Based on the workings in PVP2014-28685 – Tables 3&4 applied pressure multiplier calculations will only be available for:
- 100% and 50% tension cover only;
- ASME B16.5 & ASME B16.47 weld neck flanges from 3” to 48”;
- Flange materials with a Modulus of Elasticity between 195 GPa and 208 GPa. This range is based on ±3% of ASTM A105 Carbon Steel Modulus of Elasticity of 202 GPa;
- Imperial bolts
- Common bolt materials e.g. ASME A193-B7, ASME A320-L7;
- Spiral wound gaskets with inner and outer rings.
When a user selects a Tightening Procedure with PVP2014-28685 pressure multipliers, the PVPA and PVPB factors are sourced from Tables 3 and 4 of that paper.
The PVP2014-28685 – Tables 3&4 applied pressure multipliers can be used either with Legacy Tightening Procedure or PCC-1 2022 Appendix Q Tightening Procedure.
For extra information regarding the PVP2014-28685 – Tables 3&4 applied pressure multipliers and how they were determined, please review PVP2014-28685.
Legacy applied loads - multiplier
Tensioning loads can still be calculated using the ‘legacy’ method derived from the Length to Diameter ratio as given below:
This can be used in conjunction with the Appendix Q tensioning method where the additional passes will be incorporated as already highlighted or with the Legacy Tightening Procedure as previously shown in Figure 2. Please see Table 1 for 50% tension coverage example.
Procedure | Applied Loads | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
50% Tension Cover – Legacy – Legacy pressure multiplier | Pass A SƄload × LLF × 1.25 | Pass B SƄload × LLF | ||
50% Tension Cover – PCC-1 2022 App. Q – Legacy pressure multiplie | Pass 1a Sbload x 0.7 | Pass 1b Sbload x LLF x 1.25 | Pass 1c Sbload x LLF | Pass 2 Sbload |
50% Tension Cover – Legacy - PVP2014-28685 – Tables 3&4 pressure multiplier | Pass A Sbload x PVPA | Pass B Sbload x PVPB | ||
50% Tension Cover – PCC-1 2022 App. Q – Legacy pressure multiplier | Pass 1a Sbload x 0.7 | Pass 1b Sbload x LLF x 1.25 | Pass 1c Sbload x LLF | Pass 2 Sbload |
